How the game computes it
type = HP_TYPES[ floor((a + 2b + 4c + 8d + 16e + 32f) · 15 / 63) ]
a…f = lowest bit of HP, Atk, Def, Speed, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def IVs
power (Gen 3–5) = floor((u + 2v + 4w + 8x + 16y + 32z) · 40 / 63) + 30
u…z = second-lowest bit of the same IVs · Gen 6–7: always 60
HP_TYPES = Fighting · Flying · Poison · Ground · Rock · Bug · Ghost · Steel ·
Fire · Water · Grass · Electric · Psychic · Ice · Dragon · Dark Worked example: IVs of HP 25, Attack 2, Defense 12, Speed 17, Sp. Atk 5, Sp. Def 8 give parities 1,0,0,1,1,0 → weighted sum 25 → floor(25 × 15/63) = 5 → Bug, and the second bits give power 31. Six 31s is the famous Hidden Power Dark 70. Limitation: the move doesn't exist from Gen 8 onward, and these formulas don't apply to Gen 2 (which used DVs and a different table). Questions
Hidden Power FAQ
Why does Hidden Power type depend on odd/even IVs?
From Gen 3 onward, the type is computed from the lowest bit of each IV - that is, whether each IV is odd or even. The six parities form a 6-bit number weighted HP·1, Attack·2, Defense·4, Speed·8, Sp. Atk·16, Sp. Def·32, mapped onto the 16 possible types. That's why breeders chase specific 31/30 patterns.
Can Hidden Power be Normal or Fairy?
No. The formula can produce exactly 16 types - every type except Normal. Fairy isn't in the Hidden Power pool either (the move pre-dates the Fairy type and keeps its old type table even in Gen 6–7).
What is base power in each generation?
Gen 3–5: power is computed from the second bit of each IV, ranging 30–70 - 70 is what breeders want. Gen 6–7: power is fixed at 60 for every Hidden Power; only the type varies. The move was removed entirely in Gen 8 (Sword/Shield) and doesn't exist in Gen 9.
Which IV spread gives the Hidden Power I want?
Use the breeding-targets card: pick a type and the calculator returns the spreads that keep the most 31s (only 30s where a bit must be even) while still hitting power 70 in Gen 3–5. Six perfect 31s is always Hidden Power Dark.
Does Hyper Training change Hidden Power?
No - Hyper Training never changes IVs themselves, so Hidden Power stays exactly the same. Only breeding for the right natural IV pattern moves the type.
